Indian president had appointed Girish Chandra Murmu as the first lieutenant governor of Illegally Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. When India abrogated article 370 of the constitution and made Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir union territories, last year. He took charge of the union territory under the Jammu and Kashmir reorganization act, 2019.

Additionally, Girish Chandra Murmu is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre. He served as the expenditure secretary in the Ministry of Finance, previously. He also served as the principal secretary to PM Narendra Modi during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat.

Debate erupted over resignation on social media

Rumours about his resignation spread on social media on the 5th of August. The resignation came on the eve of 5th August 2020 which marked one year of the abrogation of article 370. According to various sources, L-G GC Murmu sent his resignation letter to the Centre on Wednesday evening. He will vacate his post immediately. Murmu is currently in Jammu and will leave for Delhi tomorrow.

These rumours proved to be true when Indian media started reporting about the acceptance of his resignation. As well as the appointment of the new lieutenant governor. Although till these rumours surfaced, it was business  as usual at governor house. Moreover, he also met with GCO northern command Lt Gen Y K Joshi. As reported by Indian news portal ANI.

Reasons for resignation

Furthermore, sources also say former L-G differed from Indian government decisions. Especially on issues like elections and restoration of internet services in illegally Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. While the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has continued to oppose the move citing fears of misuse by anti-state elements, Murmu said that he is “not afraid how people of Kashmir will use” the internet.

“We have been making [a] representation for this…I feel that 4G will not be a problem. I am not afraid how people will use this. Pakistan will do its propaganda, whether it is 2G or 4G. It will always be there but I don’t see an issue,” he told a newspaper.

New Lieutenant Governor appointed

Senior BJP leader Manoj Sinha had been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor illegally Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. By Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday (August 6).

“The President has been pleased to appoint Shri Manoj Sinha, to be the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. With effect from the date he assumes charge of his office vice Shri Girish Chandra Murmu,” said a statement released by President Kovind’s office

5th August was a black day in illegally Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Youm e istehsal e Kashmir in Pakistan.
